Brown Refuses to Use Wapato for Emergency Shelter and Treatment; Offers More Excuses Instead of Leadership

Statement

Date: Oct. 19, 2018
Location: Portland, OR

Yesterday Rep. Knute Buehler announced his plan to fast-track approval to convert Wapato into a shelter and treatment facility for the region's homeless. He called on Kate Brown to join him in supporting the plan.

"Homelessness has become a public health and humanitarian crisis in Oregon, yet Kate Brown refuses to support a solution that could provide immediate relief to Portland's homeless families. Nothing symbolizes her lack of leadership on this issue more than her refusal to take action on Wapato, which has been sitting idle for years. Yesterday in response to my call for her to join me, all she offered were more excuses. How much longer should our homeless families, particularly children, have to wait?"

Brown has stated previously that she is "stunned" by the number of homeless in Portland and that it is "overwhelming".

Despite all of this, The Oregonian noted 2 months ago, shortly after Knute released his plan, that "…Brown has not released a plan detailing how she would tackle homelessness over the next four years if re-elected."

Knute Buehler just released a new ad criticizing Kate Brown for her lack of leadership on the homelessness crisis.
